The Porta Maris Lodge No. 4287 was Constituted into the United Grand Lodge of England on the 30th of May 1921. The Lodge was then Consecrated five months later at the Queens Highcliffe Hotel in Cliftonville that was attended by over 400 brethren from across the province.

We celebrated our Centenary in the Temple at New Cross Street, Margate on Tuesday 1st March 2022. This was delayed from the planned date in October 2021 as the result of everyone playing "catch-up" following the Covid lockdowns and subsequent after effects.

When a person is initiated into Freemasonry, they complete the First Degree. At this point,

they become an 'Entered Apprentice'.

The First Degree ceremony reminds us that we are all equal – it is the responsibility of those

that do well to look after those less fortunate.

Upon completion of the Second Degree, a member becomes a 'Fellowcraft Freemason'. This encourages members to better themselves through education and focuses on

self-development.

As the final and highest honour in Freemasonry, the Third Degree — or Master Mason degree — symbolizes a person's maturity through increased knowledge and wisdom.

Here at Porta Maris, we hold our ‘Regular’ meetings' 7 times a year from October through to May on the first Tuesday of each month, but we exclude January for New Years celebrations. These meetings and others are held at the Masonic Temple, New Cross Street, Margate, CT9 1EH and as a lodge we regularly welcome several visitors and guests from other local lodges to our gatherings. Our ‘Regular’ rehearsal is always held on the Tuesday prior to the ‘Regular’ meeting.

After the meetings have concluded we enjoy a 3 or 4 course meal, in good                                                         company and prepared by caterers in our own kitchens and served in our                                                           dining area. A good range of drinks are available as we are also a licenced                                                         premises.

Lodge of Instruction nights are held on all the other Tuesdays where regular meetings

are not held. Our Lodge also has a ‘Summer Lodge of Instruction’ which allows the

masonic ‘Younger’ brethren to apply learning through practice and support of the more

experienced Officers of the lodge in a more relaxed arena.

We are very much a friendly and family orientated lodge with members introducing sons, grandsons, and in-laws into Freemasonry and we hope this will long continue as it promotes a closeness with all our members & their families. We have an age range that spans from the early twenties to our eldest member who is 99 young!

We also maintain regular contact with and involve our widows of passed members in Christmas parties and other events through the year.
